What is Creative Writing?

Creative writing is writing that emphasizes on the use of imagination and personal expression. The writer is free to explore different literally techniques, styles and genres. They can craft unique characters, narratives and settings to create original works of drama, fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Creative writing focuses on exploring themes, evoking emotions and captivating readers through storytelling techniques and vivid language.  It allows writers to unleash their creativity and showcase their perspectives and unique voice to the world through written word.

Below is a general structure for a creative writing piece.

Structure of a Creative Writing Piece

1. Introduction

• Establish the atmosphere and set the tone
• Introduce the main theme and main characters
• Create intrigue and grab the reader’s attention

2. Development

• Build the plot, allow the story to unfold
• Grow the characters by describing their traits and conflicts

3. Descriptive Details

• Use vivid description and sensory language to create a rich experience for the reader
• Describe the setting, characters and scenes in detail in order to appeal to the reader’s sense of sight, smell, taste, sound and touch.

4. Dialogue

• Bring characters to life by incorporating dialogue
• Use dialogue to reveal conflicts, relationships and emotions among characters

5. Climax

• Build a turning point in the story
• Create a moment of revelation with high tension

6. Resolution

• Provide a conclusion to the story
• Resolve conflicts, tie loose ends and leave the reader with a sense of closure

7. Reflection

• Reflect on the main ideas you presented
• Consider the lessons you want to convey to the reader

It is important to note that creative writing does not follow a fixed template as it goal is to allow writers to use individual style and enjoy the freedom of expression. You should feel free to adapt this template to fit your own techniques, styles and narrative approaches. The salient characteristic of creative writing is letting your imagination guide your writing process.
